I drove in from Baltimore, MD with my friend, Ryan Cormier. We parked at Pen Mar Park and hiked to the Mason Dixon line. I started at 6:10am on the Pennsylvania side. Ryan ran the first ~2 miles with me and then returned to the car. It was my first ultra attempt so I tried to take it easy. I filled up at springs at miles 5 and 15 and again at the water pump at the Washington Monument. I carried a hydration vest and fueled with Spring energy gels, salt caps, peanut butter filled pretzels, and PB&J sandwiches, which I carried in my vest with a bladder. It poured rain on me from the Washington Monument to Gathland, especially at Lambs knoll. Ryan met me at Gathland (about 50k in), where I fueled with gatorade and changed my shirt. I felt really good at this point. I then continued running solo. At mile 37 my legs became very tired and I had difficulty with the downhill to Weverton. Once I got to the c&o canal I had to run/hike due to the fatigue in my legs, despite the easiness of the trail. Ryan met me in Harper's Ferry at the footbridge, when he handed me a beer and power hiked the rest of the way with me as I drank the beer. I got to the WV/VA border at 10 hours 33min 22 sec. I sat on the ground there for a bit and then had a long painful hike back down to Chestnut Hill Road, where Ryan's girlfriend, Zoey picked us up in her car. Overall a really great experience.
