I had planned on doing this double as part of training for the Easter States 100 a few years ago but it didn't work out. So, with UTMB quickly approaching and a perfect weather day I set out after 6 AM from the Stratton parking lot (it has a toilet!). This was completely unsupported; 4 liters of water with about 1600 calories of Tailwind. I knew I'd run out but was hoping I had enough to last most of the return trip. I did not fill up at any of the water stops either and bonked a bit in the last few hours for sure. I did suck down some blueberries in my effort just to wet my mouth during the last couple hours! I hit East Flagstaff Rd in 5:53:56 and made it back to the car in 12:16:36, exhausted but in one piece. It is definitely a tough route one way and doing the double was a great way to build for UTMB. There are certainly opportunities to shave off some time so someone should give it a go!
