Description

This is a very challenging route. Acatenango Volcano is the 3rd highest volcano in Central America  (3976m above sea level) and certainly of the most difficult and technical.

The Ascent start at 2500m over the sea level so the altitude will certainly be involved along the adventure.

The first kilometers are  VERY steep, the terrain is mostly gravel and loose dirt. After that, you will face a humid "forrest" (with many turns, a sinuous trails) and therefore, the trails become softer and muddy but always steep terrain (however, less steep that the previous section).

The next section begins when you leave the "Humid" section. Now, you feel in a Volcano, the trails still sinuous, they become less steep but now you face gravel and volcanic sand. The view is STUNNING (you can see the city, the mountains and at least 6 more volcanos) but now, you can start feeling the change of temperature and pressure.

Between the 3rd section previously described and the last one, you will be able to enjoy a "flat" section (75m long with a nice view to Fuego volcano that is currently active). While you take your breath back, you will have in front of you a clear view of whats coming.....the top of the Volcano.

This last section is definitely the hardest part of the ascent (but the coolest part of the descent). This last section is called "La Maldita" ("The Cursed") by locals. This Section is VERY steep (at least 60° degree slope). In addition to that, the terrain is 100% volcanic sand and little rocks. You can sink in the sand at least 15cm at every step. All this factors makes almost impossible to reach the summit. For every 3 step you take, you back off 2 steps. VERY CHALLENGING SECTION.

Once you get to the summit, you feel out of this world. Every moment of suffering becomes pure joy. You re at the top of the world. You have a 360° view to stunning landscapes. You're only 2km aways (straight line) from Fuego volcano that is constantly erupting. No words can explain this feeling.
