Description

The ancient Walls of Ferrara encircle the historic centre of this magnificent city, located about an hour west of Venice.   The route follows the walls for almost six miles. They are one of the oldest and most impressive defensive systems of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.  They make use of all the techniques of defence used in the 1400s and 1500s: city gates, bastions, large towers, gun slots and embrasures.  Most of the walls to the north were built between 1493 and 1505 and are marked out by the smaller semicircular towers and by the long “patrol path” used by the sentries.   The route mostly follows the top of the walls, dropping to pass through parkland around some of the forts, or to cross a few entry roads.   It offers glimpses of the many towers of the castles and churches which fill the city.  It is mostly paved and lined with avenues of fine mature trees to provide shade, with a profusion of flowers in season.  More information here - https://www.ferraraterraeacqua.it/en/ferrara/discover-the-area/art-and-culture/arches-doors-walls-porticos/the-city-walls.
