The Powerline Trail has been on my list for years. However, up until recently, it’s been heavily overgrown with little zero access. That changed this past year as the county has gone in and given it a makeover creating an amazing route in the heart of Kauai.

I started at the tanks in Princeville off of Kapaka St. The first 6 miles are pretty sweet and rolling with about 1700’. And then, it opens up beautifully 4+ miles down down down to Gate/Arboretum Area.

Touch that gate and turn around.

That said, the four miles back up was fine and went up about 2200’. While you are going up, don’t forget to turn around and look behind you and spot the gorgeous views. I started in the dark to avoid the heat and very much enjoyed the sun on my back with the beautiful morning light heading back to the start.

Also, mud was fine. I’ll give it a three out of 10 for muddiness and it’s definitely been raining here for the last several days.

There aren’t many of these full dirt running routes on the island (minus the glorious Kalalau). Thrilled to shuffle around to the middle of the island and experience the lush tranquillity of this area.
