Description

This is favorite trail running route in the area for numerous running clubs in the Hillsborough area, and includes the highest point in Orange County, North Carolina.

Starting in the Park parking lot, by the restroom building

The idea here is to complete all of the following official park trails in a single, non-stop effort:

  • Occoneechee Mountain Trail Loop
  • Brown Elfin Knob Trail
  • Chestnut Oak Trail
  • Overlook Connector
  • Hillsborough River Walk (only to the trailhead at Eno Mountain Road)

Possible turn by turn directions:

Start in the park parking lot by the restrooms

Take the gravel road past park ranger house to the top. Turn around at the tower, run back down gravel road take left onto Chestnut Oak Trail.

At the end, go left onto Occoneechee Mountain Loop Trail back to parking lot.

Go through parking lot, and go right to continue on Occoneechee Mountain Loop Trail. At the intersection with Brown Elfin Knob Trail, take left onto Brown Elfin Knob Trail. At intersection with Chestnut Oak Trail (gravel road), turn around and return to the intersection with Occoneechee Mountain Loop Trail, go left and continue loop. Continue up to the overlook and do an out and back on the overlook connector. On the return to the intersection with the Occoneechee Mountain Loop Trail go left to continue loop. At the bottom of the wooden steps go right on the Hillsborough Riverwalk connector. At the end (Allison road) turn around and go back to the wooden steps.

At the bottom of the wooden steps go right on Occoneechee Mountain Loop trail and continue all the way back to the parking lot to end.

Park is open from 8am to 8pm 7 days a week
