Description

This is just the last 100K+ of the Via de la Plata route of the Camino de Santiago, the minimum distance to be recognised with a distance certificate by the pilgrim's office. A "pilgrim's passport" can be stamped along the way to provide a souvenir, and to show at the office. Unlike the more popular St James route, it is conveniently possible as a 1-day adventure because a high-speed train links the two cities. The route is well waymarked and takes in open hills, eucalyptus forest, the magnificent Oseira monastery, and finishes in the beautiful stone-paved city of Camino de Santiago itself. It is an ideal 1-day ultramarathon challenge.

The 114 km GPX file includes some errors! It should be a little shorter if executed perfectly.

I should have said when defining this: consider the 'correct' route to be Ourense railway station to the Santiago de Compostela cathedral doors, via the current waymarked (Via de la Plata) Camino path, which may change a little with time. My GPX includes some wrong turns you would not want to take! I really recommend this as an adventure if you're in the area.

Note that this pilgrimmage route is very spiritual for many people who do it, so be sensitive to religious sensibilities. It wasn't intended as an ultramarathon route, but makes an excellent one!
