Description

In overview, the route loops round the high features around the edge of the beautiful Black Mountains in South East Wales. The route follows well established routes and clear landmarks following a clearly identifiable high ground. On clear days, views range from across the Brecon Beacons to mid-Wales and the Cotswolds.

Starting from the Red Lion pub in Llanbedr the route climbs up onto Table Mountain. From Table Mountain, the route continues to climb to Pen Cerrig-calch weaving North. The route follows the high points along a stunning ridge through Waun Fach at 811m. Continue following the horseshoe through the 713m Trig Point and onto Lord Hereford's Knob.

Descend, crossing the Gospel Pass before climbing again to the spectacular Hay Bluff. From Hay Bluff follow the ridge South along the Offa's Dyke Path on a 20km rolling descent with views down to Llanthony Priory to the West. Pass East of Hatterrall Hill down the Beacon's Way to Pont-Rhys Powell. Traverse around the high ground in the vicinity of Twyn y Gaer Hill Fort, through the five way junction up to the Fro Car Park South of Forest Coal Pit.

Climb up the Sugar Loaf before enjoying the final descent back to the Red Lion pub following a mixture of narrow lanes and footpaths. 90% trail. 10% small quiet lanes. Very limited natural water stop opportunities for the first 45km.
