Route: East Dupage River (IL)

Illinois, US
26 mi

This unusual challenge was posted by Peter Hubbard:

Michael Demeritt and I (Peter Hubbard) ran the length of the East Dupage River in Dupage County, Illinois, starting at the source in Bloomingdale and finishing at the confluence of the East and West Dupage Rivers in Naperville, IL, on Saturday, May 11th, 2013. It was 26.25 miles and we finished in 5:21. There is not a trail per se, but we followed the river as closely as possible via game trails, power line paths, and bushwhacking, traveling as close to the river as possible which often meant going under bridges rather than over them, and avoiding more convenient bike paths that were too distant from the river. This is not a backcountry trail by any means, but it is truly a suburban bushwhack and plenty of fun - a choose your own adventure if you like. If anyone chooses to try the route, I'm sure the exact path will vary from what we did, but I do hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

We began in the culvert just south of Westlake Junior High where the East Dupage River appears from some underground concrete pipe. We ran the route unsupported with no water re-supply (we carried just enough). We finished at the confluence of the East and West Dupage Rivers in Knoch Knolls Park off of Royce Road in South Naperville.
