Description

The west ridge of Forbidden peak is one of the 50 american classics and sits in the heart of the North Cascades of Washington state. It challenges hikers and runners to gain the steep basin to reach the summit. The route starts at the boston basin trailhead at 3,223 ft and finishes at 8,783 ft returning to the car for a 8mi loop and 5,603 ft of vert packing in a solid day of mixed skills. The route starts at the Boston Basin trailhead with light running and steep trails to Boston Basin high camp at about 6,500 ft. After traversing the high alpine meadows you gain the couloir to the left edge of the South Face of Forbidden Peak. This is where the climbing starts to the true summit. You return by rappelling down the north face to and scrambling back to the notch where you started climbing. A few more repels take you back to the slab rock where you run back the way you came. This route is the perfect combo of trail running, alpine hiking, scrambling and a little climbing. This route is a favorite for many in the western states attracting 100's of people regularly.
