The Western Maryland Rail Trail is a paved route that runs parallel to the C&O Canal in Western Maryland. The route begins in Big Pool, MD - in 2019, it was extended from 22 miles to 28 miles, ending in Little Orleans, MD.

Between Mile Markers 24 and 27, the Indigo Tunnel is permanently by-passed by using ramps to the C&O Canal Towpath. The by-pass is two miles long due to a bend in the Potomac River. The surface of the towpath is for the most part an even hard-packed dirt trail.

I started my run in Little Orleans, MD (mile 28) and run to Big Pool, MD (mile 0). For this run I carried and used 18 ounces of tailwind, 2 gu’s, 4 pieces of gum. The weather was sunny and around 50 degrees.
