A wonderful route that I'd had my eye on for a while and was grateful when the opportunity arose. I started at first light, which happened to be mid incoming tide, which would give me the opportunity to run on the sand below the high tide line and also make the inlet water swim at near high with relatively low current for safety. The footing is a constant ever changing decision making process - pick your poison of deep sand, ankle twisting rock fields or occasional slippery clay. I had been most concerned with the water crossing so I put every effort into minimizing risk, but it turned out to be less than 3 minutes of swimming (about 150 meters). Still I'd recommend having a spotter for this as the previous route holder had. Also - those with glass ankles should heed caution - I rolled my ankles over 100 times. 2 wipeouts while scoping surf spots as well.
The route can be done much faster. I went sort of cautious pace until the last couple miles and I had race legs from yesterday's trail 10k. Enjoy- it's a hoot.
