Background
I was traveling through the area for work and decided to take advantage of the opportunity to run this unique historic route. The night before, I camped at Shawnee State Park, which provided a great base for an early start.
Run Details
- Start Time: ~8:30 AM
- Weather: 40°F with light flurries at the start. The first half of the route was slightly downhill, making for a smooth and fast outbound leg.
- Turnaround: The return was uphill and much more challenging as the winds picked up considerably, blowing straight into my face.
- Trail Features: The abandoned turnpike offers a fascinating glimpse into history—seeing the old roadway and tunnels 50–60 years after closure was surreal. The tunnels were completely dark, requiring a headlamp for safe passage.
Gear & Nutrition
- Pack: UltrAspire Speedgoat 3.0
- Hydration: Two 550ml bottles filled with Maurten 320 drink mix
- Fuel: Two Maurten 100 CAF gels
- Lighting: Headlamp for tunnels
Experience
All in all, it was a fantastic day for a run—cold but manageable, with a mix of light snow and wind adding to the adventure. The combination of history, solitude, and challenge made this FKT attempt memorable.
