I drove by myself to the start of the route at Canyon Estates Trailhead at about 3:30am on Friday, Oct 18, 2024. I started the run at 3:57am. I had my running pack full of food and layers for the day, as well as 1.5L of water in a bladder and a water filter for the spring. The pre-dawn morning was SPOOKY! However, I was not eaten by a mountain lion, and was eventually treated to some gorgeous sunrise views.
My first water stop was the public outdoor spigot near the tram building/ski area on top of the crest around mile 14. I reached out to the previous FKT holders and that seemed to be the best option. Worked fine, and I continued to the northern terminus of the crest trail. The downhill headed to there was glorious, and the spring at Tunnel Springs was great! I filtered it just to be safe. The climb back was honestly brutal, as you can see from my splits. I did a lot more power hiking than expected, and some not-so-powerful hiking. But I was in a good mood all day and the weather wasn't crazy. I refilled my water for the last time at the same spigot as I used earlier, and somehow got myself back to the finish line. When I saw that I could get sub 15 I perked up quite a bit!
For food, I ate everything pictured in the attached photo. I received no help with food, water, spectation, or company the whole day. I actually only passed 3 hikers on the trail all day -- spooky!!
I lost some time messing around with gear. It was hot, cold, showers, wind, and everything in between and I had to change my layers around a lot to stay comfy. I carried all my gear the whole time.
At the end I did phone a friend to drive me home. I was too loopy and tired to drive. It was a really hard day but a great adventure! I had previously done a very casual single-crossing, so it was fun to string this together.
