I'd wanted to do this run for a while, living in Bovey and noting that most routes across the more go from North to South, so this seemed a bit different, and a great way to mark the last couple of days before turning 40. My wife, Si, was vaguely keen and decided to do her longest ever run and to do it together.
We live a few hundred metres from the start in the middle of Bovey, so started the journey from home, through the start, and off to Tavy, having dropped off a car the day before. Our friend Katharine came along for fun to Widecombe (start to 14.4km), and waved bye from there (hence making the run supported, but this was only support we received). The existing route on the FKT site seems to finish a few hundred metres short of what we considered to be the "actual" finish, so we did this to finish in the centre of Tavistock in Bedford Sq in front of the Guildhall and statue.
After weeks of glorious weather, it was typical that we did the route in the rain (better than forecast at least) but into a fairly stiff SW wind the whole way. It rained on and off with varying amounts of Dartmoor clag/mist/mizzle but some nice breaks and patches of sunshine - a proper Dartmoor day! Highlights were time on the moor in general, linking up various routes that we'd done before and near some favourite spots, and looking forward to the excellent feed and hotel awaiting us in Tavistock.
