1/4/22: Jason and I completed the Devil's Path East to West in the winter unsupported as a mix-gender team.
Weather: Cold and clear, starting temp around 10 degrees, warmed up to about 25 throughout the day. Comfortable.
Conditions: Hard ice, dusting of snow on the ground at time. Mostly clear and frozen terrain.
After meeting up and leaving a car at the west trailhead, Jason and I drove to the east trailhead and witnessed a brilliant sunrise over Hunter Mountain. We hit trail right at 8 am and were met with mixed conditions, mostly frozen hardpacked trail or icy chutes. It was my first time hiking in the Catskills and I really enjoyed the beauty of the trail and all the rock formations.
Gear Per Person: Extra socks, rain pants, puffy jacket, mittens, gloves, 3 L of drinks, 2000 calories of food, extra layers, exospikes
Jason and I kept a consistent pace throughout the day, stopping about every hour to drink, eat and adjust layers. Second half was easier than the first, even though we got distracted by a cute dog and wandered off on the wrong trail for a bit. Beware the blue! Stay on the red.
Beautiful day in the Catskills. Was so nice to see new territory.
