As the Cabin John Trail is a recent addition to the FKT site and the trail closest to my home, I figured it was worth a shot at what I felt was a beatable current time. Conditions were typically humid for this time of year, but I left early enough that the temperature was relatively mild. The first half of this out n' back was pretty uneventful, although as the current FKT holder noted in his report, there are myriad spurs and alternate trails branching off the CJT, so one must be mindful not to make a wrong turn, and I stopped several times to check my map and ensure I didn't go off course. I stuffed plenty of food (gummies, waffles, and dried fruit) into my pockets and two large, hand-carry bottles, but in the high humidity, found that even more than a quart of fluids was insufficient, and I started cramping a bit in my calves during the last few miles, making the last, very hilly/rolling section of the trail before the finish an especially tough struggle. I still managed to come in 3 minutes under the record time, but I look forward to trying this route again with even more hydration and cooler temps!
