With the weather unseasonably cool and the trails bone dry, I figured I'd take a crack at regaining the FKT on my backyard trails.
Set off just after dawn to minimize foot traffic and road crossing delays. Ate a hearty breakfast and then brought 2L of Tailwind, plus three Spring Energy gels in my vest to keep me fueled. With the ideal conditions, I was able to keep a very steady pace throughout, going out in about 1:12 and returning in 1:12. No wrong turns and no real stops except to briefly take a picture at the turnaround at Goya road and then again to pause for traffic at the River Road crossing, but together, they only cost me a little over a minute. Both my fitness and my prep were much better than when I set the FKT two years ago, and it really showed.
