The first time I tried this route was last July, and I got about 75% in before I sprained my ankle and had to hobble down to the valley and take a bus back to Ardesio. That time I attempted the route together with my dog and my camping gear, and learned that this wasn't a great idea. There is a long section in the middle which is scrambling, with lots of chains, and not very dog friendly.
So before the season ended and the winter came in, I came back and ran/hiked the route over 3 days (2 nights). It was great weather, sunny but not too hot. There was not much water around at the end of the summer, especially compared to early July.
On the first day I did the longest section but it is less technical. I decided to do the route counter clockwise mainly because the first hut was not open outside of the weekends, and I therefore had to reverse the route to make the logistics doable. On the second day I had the long technical section, and was out for a long time to get over the terrain safely. Some of the path had washed away compared to July. On the last day it was largely downhill, and the huts for refuelling were all closed. So I pushed on quickly to get back to Ardesio and have a late lunch whilst very hungry!
All in all a great three days, with the most lovely and welcoming hut staff, who even served me my dinner a bit later on the second day since it took me so long to get in. I also was able to get breakfast extra early, so I could make use of the most daylight.
