I ran Esperero-Cathedral loop on March 9th. This run is on the annual schedule of Tucson Trail Runners, and the running group has maintained records of people's finish times going back to the 1970s when the running group was founded. The previous fastest record for this route, not recorded on Strava, was 4:15:37, a record set in 2014 by Anne Neuenschwander. I set out to see if I could take this course record. Though Tucson Trail Runners were out running the route, I ran alone the entire time, passing a few people who started before me but never running with anyone or accepting any aid. I carried 2L of fluids since it is dry and I was uncertain if there would be any water available for filtering (there is a seasonal waterfall on Esperero Trail, Bridal Veil Falls, where water can be filtered when present). I carried gels and chews for my nutrition. There was snow on the Cathedral Rock Trail descending toward West Fork, which was fun and beautiful! I took the climb relatively easy and then turned up the intensity at the end, as the FKT was in reach! The last few miles on the Tram Road are fast!
