Started the self-supported race at the NDW signpost at Farnham.  The first checkpoint I used to top up my water supply was at the Greene Deane Car Park where there is a mobile café - 18 miles in.  The water supply was enough (another 3L) would get me through to the second checkpoint which was at the Knockholt Pound convenience store in the village.  By this time I was struggling - it was meant to be 50 miles by this stage but I had clocked somewhere in the region of 55-60 miles sometimes taking wrong turns due to the downloadable route instead of following the NDW wayward marked.   First mistake.  I might not be able to get there by closing time 20:00 but just made it with 30 mins to spare.  I was carrying enough food to last me the whole race but I decided to buy and eat a foot long baguette.  I also bought some more water (2L) and one can of Red Bull that I replenished.  This was enough to get me to the third checkpoint at what would have been mile 81 - Bluebell Hill Shell Garage (24 hour access) which also has a toilet.  I was really struggling by this stage with the cold.  The third mistake.  I didn't pack any base layers or gloves.  I've jogged in 8°C before but the difference this time was the wind-chill factor which I overlooked.  When I was packing my gear I kept telling myself you won't need that stuff - you've never needed it before ya de da da and I was wrong.  Anyway at the Shell Garage I stocked up on 2L of water, two cans of Red Bull, two packets of crisps, two hot steak pastry slices and a Cappachino.  I was now tired and could just about manage 20 min/mile pace.  Even after walking slowly and eating those foodstuffs I was still struggling to carry on.  The next stop was at Dunn Street (checkpoint 4) where there is a water tap I can use but no food.  Anyway, before then because I was in a bad way I stopped off at the Wheel Inn in Westwell.  I thought I had gone past the Dunn Street Caravan Site as I had clocked nearly 100 miles by this time.  So I stopped at the Wheel Inn for about 2 hours having a main meal and a desert.  Feeling refreshed I soldered on but I just didn't have the energy in my legs so ended up doing a bit of a jog and a walk.  There were no further checkpoints after that - there is a pub between Folkestone and Dover I was planning to use but this was well and truly closed by the time I got there.  I had enough water and food to get me to the finish though.  What I did need was some sleep.  On the first night I tried sleeping for three times for ten minutes each - but my Garmin didn't register any sleep.  On the second night I tried sleeping for three times for thirty minutes each.  This time my Garmin registered only one sleep of twenty minutes.  It was too cold on each occasion to get any decent sleep - anywhere where I could - mainly in some undisclosed bush.  Having reached the outskirts of Dover j wasn't interested in some finala finish - I was just taking photos of the WW2 lookouts and looking around Dover's historical sites.  I managed to find the finish line in the end - it's not like Farnham where there is a sign saying Dover 153 miles - there's just a NDW signpost jobbies.  Anyway, I made it to Adrian Street totally worn-out by the whole experience but loving it nonetheless ...
