We found this route to be exceptionally beautiful in early Fall, though the trail conditions on the south end were notably slippery as a result. River crossings could potentially be high if Fall weather includes lots of rain. The trail is in excellent condition, considering how rural most of it is. A significant slide wiped out the trail and also plugged it with timber and boulders on the Quinault side of the Low Divide which would be challenging to cross with a full backpack. A second fall in the Elwha Valley requires a keen eye to stay on track and not be distracted by a distinct game trail leading east. Personally, I fell in love with the route and will be out again next year to attempt another FKT. I really hope the road to Whiskey Bend is repaired by then because the seven mile walk to the car on a gravel road was absolutely awful in the rain and cold.
