It was a very warm day for January. The temperature reached into the 60's. I started at the Northern trail head in North Canaan, Just across a small bridge from an old, historic iron works site. There was almost no snow or ice on the trail.
A long climb started early in the first mile. The remaining miles were fairly level, but deep ruts, mud and deep puddles dominated the southern half of the trail. The Southern trail head is located at the intersection of Steep Road and Canaan Mountain Road.
The return trip back to the iron works was quicker, being level or down hill, but I was still slowed down by the mud and having to search for the trail a bit in a couple spots.
