I completed Trooper Trail in the Soldier Creek Wilderness of the Nebraska National Forest Recreation Area on September 26, 2022. I started at the Middle Fork Trailhead and ended at the South Fork trailhead. Since it was such a short distance, I didn't carry any water or food with me. I did have my emergency filter with me, just in case, since there are various creek crossing and also a cattle trough around 4.25 miles. I planned on running the whole thing, but after completing 2 fkt attempts the day prior, I ran some downhills and hiked the rest. The trail was fairly easy to follow as there as wooden posts every few hundred yards or so. I didn't see any person on my run, but did happen upon some mule deer and roaming cattle. A time of 1:20 is probably fairly attainable on this trail, especially if running the trail the direction I did, since the elevation increase is rather gradual and then about halfway you will start a gradual descent with the last three miles being on relatively flat plains. I also ran the trail starting at Middle Fork because there are 4 shallow creek crossings around 7.5, 7.75, 8, 9.25 miles which you can find a way to hop and remain dry (as i did) or just barrel through since they are towards the end of the trail.  The higher terrain is relatively sparse with some pines dotting the landscape due to a forest fire that the area never fully recovered from, but for being Nebraska, I thought that the elevation increase was a great aspect of this trail. There are also many other trails in the area to explore and camping right by the trailhead. Hunters and equestrians use other trails in this area that also start at these trailheads.  I did this trail as part of a two week trip to hit the highest points in 7 states (SD, NE, Southeast WY, CO, NM, OK and MO). I added in trails along the way as a way to cut down on so much driving each day and to explore many of the areas of the country that most just neglect on their way through to the more popular destinations out west. I would recommend this trail for those that want to really experience all the variety the United States has to offer and really wish I would have spent more time exploring other areas in the Nebraska National Forest. I will need to return soon.
