On the 12th of September (10:00 AM) I started in Prien am Chiemsee. It was a supported attempt, supported by Erik, Salif and Joel (see picture with Erik and Salif). It was a very hot day, with temperatures up to 28 degrees Celcius. In the evening, I met Erik Kemper at the top of the Hochfelln (1.674 m) and we covered the first night together. Unfortunately, the weather changed quickly with many thunderstorms at night. Day 2 was the hardest, as we had 10 liters of rain every hour for the entire day, facilitating cool temperatures at night and blisters. It is important to note that the Steig coming down from Grunstein was quite tricky and slippery, also due to the (heavy) rainfall and attention and being careful is definitely needed here. It tooks us quite some time to cover this section safely. Erik joined for the second night too. We slept approximately 2 hours every 24 hours (In Erik's Camper, parked at a camping along the trail). Salif joined for night 3 and Joel for night 4. Important to note is also that there are often maintenance works on the SalzAlpenSteig. We had to take the other side of the Hallstatter Lake as the regular SalzAlpenSteig was closed there, so we followed the detour that was proposed by the SalzAlpenSteig to the finish in Obertraun. If the detour was not clearly marked, we took the closest road/trail. My strava recording said that we covered 280 kilometer in total by connecting all SalzAlpenSteig etappes including the detour along the lake, as did GarminConnect. Overall, it is a fantastic trail. It combines beautiful towns, (Salt)history and alpine landscapes and summits. Crossing some rocks and mountain ranges at night was magical, but does require maximal focus. As team, we managed to tackle the challenge despite the very difficult weather during the first half. A big thank you to Erik, Salif and Joel. Without the team the adventure wouldn't be the same! If you have any questions about the route or are planning the adventure yourself, feel free to reach out on Strava!
