I drive past this peak all the time on I-80, and it looks pretty massive from the highway. I was on my way back to Reno from a work project in Winnemucca and drove up to the bottom of the route in the early afternoon. The route starts at an abandoned (read: haunted) old schoolhouse and some old mining buildings in the canyon, which are cool to check out.
The way up starts steep right away, up a very steep but nice dirt road. It stays relentlessly steep for most of the way up, then levels out about 1000' from the summit as it crosses below the summit ridge. The road then ends at a saddle and turns into over-grown two-track up the final ridge to the summit. I did this in December, and there was a good amount of crusty snow the final ridge. I got to the top, took a few pictures, and hightailed it back down before I froze to death. Very windy and cold, but it gets quite the opposite in the summer. Ran moderately downhill, time for this can be made up by bombing the descent. Beautiful mountain, old mining history, and again, an underrated peak in Nevada.
There is no water on the route, except for the creek at the parking area
