Tongariro Northern Circuit 🏔️
On the way back home south after competing in Ironman Taupo 70.3. Be rude not to do a Central plateau run!
I had done the Tongariro Alpine crossing twice before, but this would be my first time doing the Northern Circuit. By the time I got there it was 1pm. I had skipped lunch and was feeling pretty tired, so took it slow and steady. Very little nutrition with me (cookie time and jelly beans!), so wasn't able to push hard at all. Took my time to enjoy the awesome scenery. Overcast but nice day. Stunning and varied route; from volcanic moonscapes, desert, forest, colorful lakes, river beds, some really technical, some super runnable. Lots to keep you entertained :)
Solo and unsupported. Only 20-30 hikers out and about. Didn't see any other runners.
Would be great to come back on fresh legs and with proper nutrition to give this one a faster FKT attempt!
Awesome hot-tub post run was a treat 😁
