The run started from the Monumento de Juarez on the International Highway and finished by touching the statue of Benito Juarez sitting down I the town of Guelatao. This was the complete route envisioned by the creator of this trail, former Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The same route but going the other direction (starting in Guelatao and finishing at the monument) would probably a faster route as there is a bit less climb and more downhill. The last 11 miles is almost all downhill (albeit pretty steep at times).
This was a solo run. I started at 5:12am at the Monumento (see picture) with temperatures in the upper 50s. The weather was perfect, overcast all day and a high in the low 70’s. I only stopped once at a small family owned grocery store in the town of El Punto, around mile 16, right along the “trail”. I bought a small bottle of water, an electrolyte drink and a Mexican dessert bread. I brought with me about 1.5 ounces of water (temps were cool) and ate 4 pb&js along the run for fuel.
I finished the run in 6 hours, 44 minutes and 05 seconds. This is a relatively soft record run. Hopefully, more local people and perhaps a visitor can break this soon. I would like to run this again and go for under 6 hours and 30 minutes. To be honest, FKTs aren’t well known here in Mexico.
