On Oktober 15th 2022, Karsten and I were shuttled to our startingpoint at Skovby as we decided to run the Gerndarmstien reverse (towards our "home"-direction). Weatherforcast said rain starting at 6pm, so we started at 8am to be hopefully at the finish without getting wet.
The Gendarmstien is highly recommended to run, perfectly marked (we only followed the official signs - actually a gps-track is only needed as a backup) and the paths very rarely go along pavement. Most of the time a nice (well, later not so nice) up and down - we collected on our tracks a total of 900 vertical meters up. We met some hikers, some mountainbikers on the paths, but in late fall there a not so many peoole on the track.
From the beginning of Oktober some of the public restrooms are closed, but some are open all year long (visiting the interactive hiking map for informations is a good recommendation). So we were easily able to try the FKT unsupported. Since we had very moderate 12-15°C temperature, we only needed some water twice (Sonderborg castle and at the bridge of Egernsund). Even though very tempting: no hot dogs at "Annies Kiosk"! (will come back for those!!!)
Some parts of the trail leads along the cobblestone beach and in some parts the feet might get a little wet - but nothing to worry about. Always be prepared to look for roots and rocks on the way, when the path is leading close to the cliffs or thru the woods.
We arrived in Padborg at the end of the trail just before the rain started - a perfect day for a first known time (somebody has to set the first pace...)
To all the next condendors: have fun and enjoy this beautiful route in southern Denmark!
