On a recent bicycle tour of Sumatra, I stopped at Indonesia’s tallest volcano for a day hike, hoping to set the fastest time on strava. Despite the rainy season, the trail was relatively dry and it did not rain. I set off from the starting gate, expecting a 2-2.5hr effort to reach the summit. I pushed the pace the entire way to the top. The exposed summit looked like the planet mars - covered in orange volcanic rock, with the windiest conditions I have ever experienced. My hands lost all feeling due to the intense cold, very uncharacteristic for Indonesia. I managed to shave 18 minutes off the previous fastest time. I raced back to the bottom, slipping out several times on the loose volcanic rock section. At the base, the local guides confirmed that it was unlikely anyone had ever set a faster time - most trips include a 1-2 night stay on the mountain. Very cool experience.
