We arrived in Mariquita at 4:30 AM on the 26th of April and I started running at 5:45 AM. The weather was perfect, a little overcast and no rain. Mariquita can be quite hot during the day, so it is advisable to start early. I ran the route with the support of my coach and two teammates, who went by bike. On the weekends this road is trafficked by cyclists, but during the week it is relatively calm. There were few others out. The route finishes at the highest point, where there is a small sign that reads, "Alto de Letras". The last 10 kilometers are significantly colder, windier, and it is often rainy and damp due to high elevation. You can find agua de panela (a hot, sweet drink) with almojabana (a typical Colombian bread) and farmers cheese at the top. It is a beautiful climb, so don't forget to take in the views on the way up!
