It was a beautiful day, cool temps and a little overcast. This route is the rockiest runnable section of the AT and ends with a fun descent of Buttermilk Falls. Our first mixed gender FKT effort we have submitted! We woke early to car drop, a hard thing about this route is how long the car drop is (we spent almost 4 hours in the car with all the driving), making the out and back a little more doable for solo attempts. Leaves were down making trails a little spicey and causing a few tumbles, but overall the trails were in great shape, other than the many downed trees on the Buttermilk Falls descent. We raced each other throughout the day and had a lot of fun being cheered on by random hikers. Chased Aimee Kohler's splits and was ahead throughout the effort, but just barely, didn't have a lot of room to let off the gas. Stopped to refill bottles at Mohican road crossing and pushed on, probably could have managed without refilling. Tried for total time of 3:45 but managed to get in at 3:49 to the Buttermilk parking lot. We made great time on the front half because we know the trail and terrain a lot better, but loved having a couple miles of easier more runnable terrain on the back half.
