Started the run by 7am so the sun was out on a very clear day. Used long sleeves, bucket hat, sunglasses and sunscreen to make sure I didn’t get too much sun exposure. Waipoli road running isn’t all that bad. Did a jog/hike up the whole way. Then the Jeep road crossover to skyline is probably the only easy terrain you get of the whole route. The climb overall wasn’t bad gradual grade all the way from Rice park to the summit. Met crew for supplies at the summit then made our way down sliding sands. First 3-4 miles or so are steep down into the crater then you’ll get to a junction and you’ll stay straight to go to Kapalaoa cabin. This is the beginning of the worst part of the whole route. Just long, flat, exposed, sandy sections of wasteland. Get to the cabin, use the porta potty with a wonderful view then bail out of there the way you came and quickly turn to head towards Holua cabin. Then a short flat single track section towards the craters edge that you’ll follow steep switchbacks up for like 2.5 miles. Short section of downhill then all pau at the campground for Hosmer Grove. This route is GNARLY. Thought the second half of the run would be much easier but that terrain was no joke.
