I set out around 6:30am from the camp entrance. I initially wanted to start closer to 6:00am, but it was freezing out and I wanted to spend more time by the heater in the Grajales tent lol. I brought way more layers than I needed this day, which made for a heavy pack, but better to be safe than sorry I suppose. I made really good time to Camp 2 and then slowed from there. I felt like the altitude hit me hard this day for some reason. I had previously climbed Ojos, which is a similar elevation and remember that one feeling much easier. There were quite a few parties on the traverse that I had to maneuver around. Anyways, after about 4 hours 50 minutes I reached the summit. I spent about 10 minutes up there snapping a few photos and briefly chatting with a few folks. Then I turned around. I chose to take the shortcut descent from the traverse to Camp 2. In dry conditions, this is supposed to be great scree- postholing in the snow slowed me down considerably. At the base I stopped briefly to take off my spikes before running down the dry scree, which was very fun. I brought 1L water for the day, and didn’t drink it all. Thank you Grajales Expeditions for helping to arrange all the logistics. I will be back at some point in better conditions to run it faster! :)
