Began at the trailhead just after 8:30am with 80oz of water. Chilly morning — 36F and stayed chilly the first few hours. Stunning views of the Deschutes and canyons. Trail got very rocky and scraggly after 17th mile. Had to watch my feet very carefully with sheer drop. Reached Mack's Campground at 4h10 and turned around while munching a turkey sandwich I packed. Next six miles of loose rock were real tough mentally but finally powered thru back to maintained trail. Began reeling in the miles to finish at 8h40m.
Overall, great experience and recommend to friends. Be sure to pack plenty of water (even when it's chilly) because I didn't see any spots to conveniently refill without descending down to the river.
