Beautiful day for a running tour of Wellington Harbor. Set out from Pencarrow Lighthouse with an easy pace on gravel path alongside rocky coastline and steep foliaged hills. Strong headwinds during first 10km. Tough getting a rhythm until wind blocked by sheltered coves. Eventually breeze subsided and found a nice groove heading into Petone’s industrial and commercial corridor. Turned north on bike path adjacent to rail tracks and benefitted from a tail wind as I reeled in Central Wellington. City brought a nice buzz on a Saturday evening as I trekked over final hills to Palmer Head finish. Was rewarded with a clear view of the southern stars and pulsing Pencarrow Lighthouse beam across the bay.
Ran in my new Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24 and they handled gravel, pavement, rail tracks, and slick rocks effortlessly. Carried salty snacks and 1L of water in my Osprey Duro to stay fueled and hydrated.
My first time in Wellington and a very memorable run to mark the occasion. Highly recommend the route for folks looking to experience the harbor’s historic grandeur… wise to check forecast to pick low-wind windows for better pace. Enjoy!
