Treated this as practice long run for nutrition, shoutout to Mike Wardian for creating this route. I did a slight alternate route at the beginning (I think adds a bit of elevation at a tiny bit shorter distance) to pass by Catholic University. Went completely unsupported, so my gear of choice was phone wallet keys, a belt and vest, 3+ liters of water (from three flasks, a 1 L Nalgene, and a Feed bike water bottle), five energy / protein bars, a couple of liquid IV packets, a windbreaker, a portable charger, and a pair of gloves (super glad I brought those). Decided to keep layers minimal despite the forecast of some rain showers and wind, knowing I could call it early if it got too bad. In hindsight, I probably could have brought a bit more food, but I wanted to test myself with forcing myself to wolf down dense protein / peanut butter bars at a cadence of about one every hour, supplanted by liquid IV calories, and run a calorie deficit for mimicking longer runs. Also wanted to test hitting the wall and pushing through that, so went out a little fast for how much I was carrying. Started shortly after 11 after taking advantage of a bathroom and water fountain right before starting at the monuments, and did well up until mile 20 ish, when the rain picked up, it got cold and windy, and my hydration plan didn't work (the liquid IV plus protein bar combo makes me nauseous). Slowed down and walked a couple portions until I dry heaved / burped twice, then felt good and managed to run at a slower pace the rest of the day, finishing my last bar with about 7 miles to go, and neglecting to use my other liquid IV because I know it'd just make me want to throw up. Finished strong with maybe about 200 mL of water remaining, so glad I got the water amount right. Given the weather, it was pretty rough as the previous two have mentioned road running on Route 1, especially onto oncoming traffic you have to be careful at times. Doubly so given it was raining, and my shoes became soaked around halfway. By the end of the run, I'd finished before the sun set but the wind and rain had picked up again and all of my stuff was absolutely drenched. Chowed down some pizza (and used the bathroom to dry off as much as I could, my portable charger had liquid in it so couldn't recharge my phone), then took the bus to Penn Station and took the train back to New Carrolton to finish off the day and luckily avoided too much exposure to outside and being somewhat less cold and wet than before.
