The Nipmuck Trail has always been there since we moved to Connecticut a few months ago. Last October, my first race on American soil was the Nipmuck Marathon (5°) and this spring I also participated in another of the trail races on the Trail, the Northern Nipmuck Trail Race (2°). The Nipmuck is always out there, so close to home. Why not run it all in one day?
With this idea in mind, and some FKT references (thanks Tony Bonanno for the inspiration) I set off around 8:30 from the West Branch in Mansfield (South to North)
The first two sections of 12/13km fell fast, the sensations were good, first refreshment in Gurleyville. The heavy rain yesterday had left the trail with complex areas of rock and water, and that was noticeable from Perry Lane, second refreshment. The humidity, hot and rain forced me to stop several times at the river to cool off and drink. From Boston Hollow Rd, my last aid station, the humidity was extreme and the terrain complex.
At Bigelow Hollow I can move fast again and go around Breackneck Pond to stop the clock in 5h56'
A great day out. Some adventures are just at the doorstep.
