I started my attempt at the former train station in Daun, Germany. At 7 o'clock in the morning, I met a friend, Thorsten, and we started shortly after that. He accompanied me to Eckfeld, which is about 16 km away from Daun. In Eckfeld, my wife and my 5-year-old daughter waited for us with hot coffee and some snacks. For me, on such longer runs, it is usually Kinder-Riegel (a chocolate snack), Knoppers (another chocolate snack), salamis, water, apple juice, coffee, and Red Bull. Thorsten took a u-turn and ran home while I continued towards Bernkastel.
From now on, I met my two supporters every 5-10 km, which was a great help because I did not have to carry any food or drink - although I usually have an emergency-supply. On the way to Wittlich you run through three more tunnels and the route leads slightly but constantly downhill, so I was able to push my pace down to 04:30 min/km without too much effort. I took a longer pause in Wittlich where I changed shoes. I guess since I am usually running in the woods, my feet are not really accustomed to running on tarmac for such long periods of time, so they started to hurt a bit. Anyway, I was quite happy with my pace and with the fact that I was able to keep it between 05:00 and 05:30 min/km.
The last stretch of the route from Lieser to Bernkastel is a bit tricky because it is not always clear where the route leads to because there are several cycling and hiking routes crisscrossing. With some asking around I managed to find the right way without any detours and I reached my destination. I am not quite sure where the official Maare-Mosel-Radweg ends, so I ran across the bridge that connects Bernkastel and Kues and finished my run at the bank of the river in the middle of the parking lot to make sure that I have all of the route covered. However, I guess the official finish is somewhere in Kues before you cross the bridge.
