This one was super fun and no stress. Usually I support my wife (Chelsey) in her FKTs, and she set the new women's unsupported FKT the day before my attempt. I noticed that there was NO male unsupported FKT (just self supported or supported), so I decided to have a bit of "fun" with the attempt. The idea was to do both peaks and circumnavigate Diamond Lake and repeat as little trial as possible. I also wanted to navigate without GPS and only map and compass. We have a cabin on the west side of the lake, so I ran around the N side of the lake, ran the howlock and spruce trial which was unmaintained and full of downfall. Then up and down Thielsen, repeating only a bit of trail. I then ran around the south side of the lake, filling water and taking a dip in Silent Spring (drinkable and cold for those doing future unsupported attempts). Then up Bailey. From the top of Bailey, things slowed down a lot as i picked my way down the ridge trying not to get pulled off on every little spur or draw. Lots of downfall, but fun. I ended up almost right on top of the cabin and a good two hours slower than my wife. Should be an easy one for someone to beat by circumnavigating the reverse of what I did.
Would likely be just as fast to climb the ridge first, then run the trail, then around the south side of lake, up Thielsen, then a nice long trail run back home!
