In Big Bend for the Ultra this weekend and saw this FKT floating around out there and had a suspicion we might be able to snag it. We were. Breezy, slight chill, warmed up fast. We were able to enjoy the tail end of sunrise from the first notch and then grind upwards past a lot of hikers who were all courteous and enthusiastic. Basin Road was supposed to be closed by now so we treasured another opportunity on Lost Mine before it goes into hibernation while the NP upgrades the lodge facilities and walls off the centerpiece of Texas' "nature" for two to twelve years. I encourage all comers. If you dig deep, you may just steal this one away from us.
