This route was always on my list of runs I always wanted to do. As a native Dubuque resident, I've run on the Heritage Trail many times. My goal was to average under 7 minute pace, ideally running all of my miles under 7 (going thru the marathon point in under 3:00) to break 3:30 at the finish at Bee Branch. This trail is very flat (rails to trails) so there are no hills to contend with. I ended up hitting the marathon in about 2:55 and finished the last 3 miles about the same pace. This was a very solid morning for me and I'm glad I did it.
I started around 6 AM in Dyersville. My girlfriend dropped me off then met me at Bee Branch at the finish. I carried 3 UD soft bottles in a Naked brand running vest. With the mild temps I only ended up drinking 1.5 bottles. For fuel I utilized mostly Meurten or Huma gels. I ran it completely unsupported and received no outside help from others. I carried my water and gels, and did not stash any supplies along the way. The ideal weather made it much easier.
