Alex Gold and I attempted to break Wes Judd's FKT on the Chicago Lakefront Out n' Back. We started at 5 AM with beautiful weather in the high 60s. Couldn't have asked for anything better in the dog days of summer. We pretty much immediately clicked off 6:15-6:20 miles off the bat. We had Alex's family for support- every 6-8 miles we swapped out handheld water bottles with full ones plus re-stocked gels in the pockets. That worked so smoothly. After a beautiful sunrise, Alex and I hit the turnaround point at the 0.0 sign at the south end of the path at an average of 6:15 pace. Once we hit the turnaround, Alex started getting back and ab cramps, which we tried to work through, walking a little bit once we hit marathon distance. From then we eased back into our rhythm until unfortunately Alex had some more serious stomach issues that caused him to have to drop at 30 miles. I continued on for the final ~6 miles and finished fairly strong although not at our original 6:15 rhythm. Finished in an elapsed time of 3:51:18 for an average of 6:22 pace overall and the new FKT. Not sure how, but the total distance came out to 36.33, a little longer than previous attempts. I also snagged a marathon PB of 2:44:19 en route. So grateful for all the support and well wishes from everyone. Alex will be back at my side sometime in the future, minus stomach issues.
