I started around 11:30 from downtown Burlington, touching the lake. The first 14 miles flew by. Very slight uphill grade but plenty of rolling hills. Mostly sidewalks and wide bike paths. I had a supply drop at mile 13.75. After this, the route was mostly running on the shoulder of very hilly, busy roads. A bit sketchy with the traffic but very manageable. Had some stomach cramps at mile 15 but dealt with them and maintained a decent pace. I stopped at a maple lemonade stand for two young kids around mile 20. The three mile gravel road climb out of underhill center to the trailhead was brutal! Really struggled up that. I had left my car at the trailhead and was able to grab some fresh water and snacks before heading up. The ascent of Mansfield via Laura Cowles is very stairmastery, and it’s a long mile gaining over 1700’, especially after already running 24 miles. I felt pretty good climbing though, and before I knew it I was on the ridge, jogging up the last easy bit to the summit. Great day, very underrated route in my opinion!
