Liechtenstein Route 66 – Our Tiny Country Epic
We set off at 6:15 a.m. under one of the most spectacular starry skies I’ve ever seen - the kind where you briefly wonder if you should just lie down and watch instead of running 47 km across an entire country. But alas, adventure called, and off we went chasing the dawn along the Liechtenstein Panorama Trail, also known as Route 66 (because yes, it really is the full length of the country).
The sunrise was pure magic - golden light spilling over snow-dusted peaks while two massive herds of chamois made their grand appearance as if they’d been hired for the occasion. The trails were in perfect shape: frozen ground for speedy progress, and plenty of mountain streams to refill bottles.
The Fürstensteig completely blew us away. We’d watched videos beforehand, sure, but in real life it felt wild – exposed and narrow ledges, and that glorious sense of being tiny in a world of big, rocky drama. Every corner gave you that “wow” moment, followed by a “don’t look down” moment.
The final 15 km weren’t exactly breathtaking - more of a trudge to tick off the distance - but by then we were grinning like fools anyway. We’d run the length of Liechtenstein! It was one of those days that felt like a perfect blend of challenge, laughter, and friendship (with a dash of chamois magic).
In short: 10/10 adventure. Would absolutely recommend. Bring your mates, good snacks, and a sense of humour - Liechtenstein might be small, but it delivers big time.
