I wanted to start even earlier to beat the heat. I started at 7:53am and it wasn't too hot at the beginning, however it became quite hot toward the top, and then on the entire return downhill. I would recommend starting at first light or when the park opens this time of the year.
I carried about one liter of Tailwind including full ice in a 2L bladder. It was not enough! I ran out within the first mile on my descent. It was a slog return to my car and my mouth was completely dry.
I consumed no extra nutrition on the ascent, but did have about 400 calories on the descent.
There is no water source during the run, so you must carry everything with you. Fortunately, some of the route is in the woods and it's shaded. This part of Colorado gets very hot in the summer.
I didn't expect to break my own FKT as my conditioning is not great right now, however knowledge of the course helped a ton and I maintained a consistent effort the whole way. My descent was slower than my ascent by about 20 minutes!
