This is a cool rails-to-trails route and I did enjoy it, however it's probably best done on a gravel bike. The surface is about 95% cinder and the small pebbles repeatedly got into my shoes. I probably stopped at least 30 times to remove the debris. I would recommend wearing gaiters on this route!

Also, there are very few services along the way to resupply. There is a Sinclair (and another) convenience store in Cortland about 15 miles from the northern terminus. It does close at 9pm. There are plenty of services in Beatrice at the halfway point, but it's about 17 miles between Cortland and Beatrice, so be prepared. I should have carried more than 1 liter fluid as I dehydrated on both 17 mile segments. Luckily, some of the route is covered in a canopy of trees. Most of the southern portion is fully exposed to the sun.

Nonetheless, I did have a fun day prepped for my next "journey race" called The Last Annual Heart of the South.
