He carried a HEAVY pack with most of the water for the full trip, and an inflatable raft for the many water crossings. He found some rain water and partially filled water bottles along the way to supplement his carried supply. John did bend the rules for a purely Unsupported trip by disposing of or giving away some of his trash and gear along the way (strict Unsupported ethic requires carrying everything from start to finish).
