From 9 Jul - 4 Aug 2022, I ran the South West Coast Path in the UK anti-clockwise, from Minehead to Poole. This was a supported trip, with various runners joining me for individual days, and a variety of friends (mostly Jonah, to whom a significant credit should go, and absolute legend, despite being Cornish) driving a support vehicle for me, which provided food and water when required.
We also used the vehicle to get to and from the trailhead every day, staying overnight in the houses of friends or at my own place, as I am a local to South Devon. The moves over water were done in a combination of watercraft, and where appropriate, the move was conducted via land vehicle, with the path always being resumed at the boat landing point in order to maintain the continuity of the journey. Most of the vehicle moves over land were to finish a day at one side of an estuary, and then start the next day at the other side.
The only bit of path which was not run during this expedition was from the RNLI station at Hope Cove, where the path goes up to Bolt Tail, to Bolberry Down car park, almost exactly 3km further East. This was due to that entire section of path being closed by the local fire brigade, who had actually taped off access to the path at Hope. These cliff fires had been taking place since May of 2022, and were unavoidable in the closure of this part of path - a vehicle move from Hope to Bolberry meant that this 3km of the path was not able to be included in the route.
Outside of this, the whole route was completed in roughly 26d 7h 49m.
I believe that I am correct in saying that I am the fastest and only para-athlete to have ever attempted this FKT and route in one continuous go. I've checked the veracity of this with the SWCPA (South West Coast Path Association), of which I am a member - they were not able to confirm or deny this, however I have not found any trace on the internet of anyone else claiming this. I'm more than happy to provide you with details of my IPC classification should you require it - I'm classified as a skier, LW4, however this is because they don't have a classification for my specific injury in snowsports - in athletics, I would classify somewhere between T35-38, as I have left-sided hemiplegia due to a brain bleed in 2014. In para-climbing, I classify as an RP2.
If you require anything further, or would like to discuss any aspect of this FKT claim, please do feel free to get in touch!
Cheers
Jonny
