On 9/12/2025, I attempted to set the Fastest Known Time on the Sink the Battleship route.
I started the route around 10 AM under clear blue skies with temperatures hovering around 60 °F — ideal running weather. Around noon, scattered cumulus clouds began to build, and by 12:50 PM (about 2 h 50 m into my effort), as I approached the summit, the skies briefly cleared over Battleship Mountain. I took advantage of the break to push for the summit.
As I reached the summit block, I could see rain falling in the mountains to the south, which motivated me to keep moving quickly. Not long after I descended from the peak, cooler air rolled in along with denser cloud cover and a light drizzle — excellent timing! Running in the cool, misty conditions felt incredible compared to the exposed sun earlier in the day.
Heavier rain didn’t arrive until I had about 30 minutes left in the run, by which point I was safely down in the canyon. The forest looked absolutely stunning in the rain, making for a memorable finish. When I got back to the trailhead around 3 PM, the car thermometer read 58 °F — perfect running temperatures to cap off the day.
